A more interesting construction of the other is in Ijé, where the older sister engages in a Faustian bargain[40] with the West, America, and the entertainment industry, to escape her Nigerian father’s domination. The other is viewed as barrier to the realization of immigrant aspirations. And, by the same token, the African American male character is constructed as someone, who, not only can navigate the complex American legal system, but as a man who is firmly grounded in himself and family. Yet, there’s probably substantial room to engage in more comprehensive assessment of African American characters (e.g., the major female lead in The Taste), as well as the use of African American culture as a kind of standard for immigrant success (e.g., Phil, in Crucial Decision).

The Black Feminist critique utilized in this chapter noted how the films involved understanding what avenues of political cogency for black women were made available through the production, representation, and reception of a film. The inclusion of Audience Reception Theory involved understanding how viewers decoded and encoded messages sent from the films that spoke to the shared experiences of black women, gendered stereotypes, complexity of black life, and power relations.
